Where classical music meets drag, and gets a makeover

Long Live the Queen (a her-story of drag) is a genre-defying cantata created by drag artist, opera singer, and costume designer Cookie Diorio and composer Andrea Clearfield. This 90-minute work-in-progress brings together drag, opera, cabaret, multi-media oratorio and performance art scored for drag soloist (tenor), chorus, opera quartet, and chamber orchestra. Told in three parts (Before, Now, and Forward) the piece dives into the history of drag, its role in queer culture, and its power to challenge systems and spark change. It doesn’t shy away from the hard stuff: Long Live the Queen calls out the ways misinformation and policy are being used to silence artists and communities, while lifting up drag as a fierce, joyful act of resistance and self-expression. It is opera reimagined through a drag lens, from a drag voice. The full work will premiere in June 2026 as part of ArtPhilly’s city-wide semiquincentennial festival, responding to the theme “What Now.”

This evening‑length work highlights the vital role of drag in society and the LGBTQ+ community, tracing its rich history from Shakespearean theater and Monteverdi’s operas performed en travesti to its present power as activism and social change. By centering the contributions of drag performers and examining the impact of social systems on their visibility, the piece fosters understanding, acceptance, and cultural transformation at a time of rising discrimination against drag events and artists in the United States. It raises urgent questions about democracy’s promise of self‑expression, whose voices are truly protected, and how misinformation, fearmongering, and policy‑making threaten artistic and personal freedoms. Ultimately, the work conveys a prescient message: that celebrating cultural expression is essential to inclusion within democracy, while Part III looks ahead to the future of this centuries‑old art form and the adaptability of democratic ideals.
